Abstract

Academic performance is the sum of different and complex factors that act on the person who learns. The low academic performance of students at all educational levels is overdetermined by multiple factors both internal and external to the individual, and can be grouped into social, cognitive and emotional factors. However, the three determining factors in the individual involve: the social, the personal and the institutional. Given this, the question arises: Will these be the determining factors for the low performance of students? To answer this question, the students of the Agricultural Engineering Career of the Laica Eloy Alfaro of Manabí University, extension in El Carmen, educational period 2018 (1) were surveyed. The statistical program SPSS Statistics 20 was used for the analysis. The relationship of the variables was determined with the CHAID classification tree and descriptive statistics. It was observed that the factors considered as determining factors for many authors have not been the barrier that overshadows the wishes of students to improve and achieve very good academic performance, but not with the students who have better possibilities and often do not usually take advantage of to develop their potential
