Abstract
The extensive reading of literary works has become one of the most effective alternatives to guarantee linguistic development, global comprehension, the taste or pleasure of reading, that is, the one that allows the formation of the reading habit to be more securely strengthened; however, and even with all these advantages, it does not materialize as an activity that pleases or delights students, especially in the teaching-learning or educational context. This work provided a great contribution to the educational and scientific community, since it allowed the presentation of an ideal alternative to the needs and characteristics of the students mentioned above. The objective of this was to design a strategy to encourage the habit of extensive reading of contemporary works in the students of the first year of high school of the Luis Aveiga Barberán Educational Unit. The information was processed through a descriptive research typology, which made use of methods such as bibliographic, inductive-deductive and synthetic analytical, which allowed, from scientific theoretical argumentation, to information processing that facilitated the presentation of results among which it was possible to show that students have not developed their own will for the reading habit, on the other hand, the types of reading preferred by students are more contemporary works. Among the most outstanding conclusions, the reality of the limited level of comprehension and the lack of strategies for motivating reading stands out, and as an imperative action, the design of a reading promotion strategy that is the architect of productive and meaningful learning
