Abstract
The objective of the present investigation was to determine the relationship between personal finances with the academic performance and quality of life of the students of the Lay University Eloy Alfaro de Manabí, extension Carmen. To fulfill this purpose, a qualitative approach was used through interviews and the quantitative approach with the application of surveys through completely random sampling with 95% confidence and 5% statistical significance. A sample of 304 students from different semesters and careers of the university extension was employed. As main results we obtained that the students have a low financial education of a theoretical nature, since in practice their financial decisions contradict the understanding of these concepts, the main sources of economic income come from their parents, fixed and occasional jobs and they located below 200 dollars per month, the main destination of income is education, food, transportation and housing. Saving, investing and using financial products and services is not a priority of university students. The perception of teaching quality is positive, but not the quality of university facilities. In the interviews, the students did not state that they have an income and expense budget to determine their monthly cash flow. In conclusion there is no direct relationship between personal finances and academic performance, but not with the quality of life of students where there is a close relationship that can positively or negatively affect their quality of life.
